A GB Fit To Climb Medical is a comprehensive health check specifically designed for climbers, ensuring they are both physically and medically prepared to participate safely in climbing activities. This medical examination is conducted in accordance with the guidelines and standards set by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).

What’s involved in a GB Fit to Climb Medical?

  • Pre-medical Questionnaires - Climbers complete self-assessment surveys, such as the Low Energy Availability questionnaire (LEAF-Q for females or LEAM-Q for males) and the Eating Disorder questionnaire (EDE-Q). These are are required to be completed before the consultation, so that the doctor can work out the individual scores alongside a physical assessment.

  • Medical Review - A GMC-registered medical practitioner reviews the questionnaires and conducts a physical examination. Height, weight, BMI, heart rate, and blood pressure to be recorded whilst seated at rest.

  • Certification
If the climber meets the required standards, the practitioner certifies them as “Fit to Climb.” If not, further testing or investigation may be recommended.
